3 ISLANDS TOUR – SAINT ANDREW & VOLCANIC ISLANDS - BRUSNIK & JABUKA
THE ISLANDS BRUSNIK AND JABUKA ARE THE ONLY TWO CROATIAN ISLANDS THAT ARE GEOLOGICALLY COMPLETELY FORMED OF LAVA ROCK AND PROTECTED AS NATURE MONUMENTS
Visit the only two Croatian islands that are completely formed of lava. Take a walk along Brusnik cyclopean beach and explore a small sea water pools used as lobster ponds. Enjoy the untouched nature on the islands protected as nature monuments.
The volcanic islet Brusnik is located 13 nautical miles from Komiža, it is protected as a nature monument, and is special because of its geological structure, and its plant and wildlife, including some endemic species.
The island of Saint Andrew known as Svetac or “the Saint“, lies 15 miles from Komiža. It was known as most remote inhabited Croatian island.
The island Jabuka is made of lava that contains plenty of magnetites and ascends pyramidically from the dark coloured sea given the huge depths surrounding it. The Island of Jabuka is, just like Brusnik, a protected natural monument.
We set off in the morning hours from Komiža, 30 minute motor boat ride. When we arrive to Brusnik with its moon-like terrain, we will take you for a walk along its cyclopean beach, greet the black lizard, admire the endemic plants (Brusnik centaurea), hear interesting fishermen stories and see the so called ‘jastožeras’. Jastožeras are places where fishermen used to keep lobsters, and they are located in a natural fissure that divides the island into two parts. Swimming break, boat ride towards the island of Saint Andrew.
Saint Andrew reflects many stories and legends from its illustrious past, including the adventures of real-life Illyrian Queen Teuta. The crumbling stone castle walls of her ancient fortification are still visible. The fortress was built on the highest point of the island. This was her stronghold, known as Teuta’s City. We will navigate around the island and continue towards Jabuka island.
Jabuka island sticks out of the endless azure like a sail, a ship without a captain and crew that is left to float forever, and only the bravest dare walking on its rough volcanic rock.
