SVETAC ISLAND
The island of Saint Andrew, known as Svetac or “the Saint“, is 15 miles away from Komiža.
It was also known as the Croatia’s most remote inhabited island. Today, unfortunately no one lives there. The island remembers many stories and legends from its illustrious past, including the adventures of real-life Illyrian Queen Teuta. The crumbling stone castle walls from her ancient fortification are still visible, built on the highest point of the island. This was her stronghold, known as the Teuta’s City.
The island is a breeding ground for a small number of Eleonora's Falcons, a rare bird with only c. 80 nesting pairs estimated to live in Croatia. The falcons migrate to Madagascar every September and return to their nests in April.
